Ear piercing
In my practice I offer ear piercing for children and adults. Regardless of whether you want an ear piercing in the area of the earlobe or the ear cartilage, I would be happy to advise you on the subject of ear piercing in my ENT practice.
Useful information on ear piercing at the ENT doctor
How painful is ear piercing?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Ear piercing pain can vary from person to person. Some people report a slight stinging or feeling of pressure, while others may find it slightly more painful. The choice of method and your individual sensitivity play a role. Modern ear piercing methods (like the STUDEX® method I use) aim to reduce discomfort to a minimum. However, note that it usually only lasts for a brief moment and the pain subsides quickly.
At what age can children have their ears pierced?
There is no set age limit for ear piercing as it can vary culturally and individually. Many parents have their children’s ears pierced as early as childhood, often from the age of 12 months to several years. With older children and adolescents, it is important to consider their consent and interest. In general, I only recommend ear piercing if your child wants an ear stud. I therefore only offer ear piercing for ages 6 and up. In my experience, children should not be forced to have their ears pierced!
Can pierced ears grow back together?
Freshly pierced ears or ears that have not yet healed would close up again if the ear studs were removed. Therefore, the first ear studs should be worn continuously for at least 6 weeks or even at least 12 weeks for piercings in the cartilage area. In total, it takes about 5 months (earlobes) or 12 months (cartilage area) until the ear holes have completely healed. During this time you should only wear stud earrings or earrings with a stud-shaped core, not dangle earrings. The connector pin should be made of surgical steel or other anti-allergic material.
Can you go swimming with freshly pierced ears?
It is advisable to avoid swimming as much as possible during the healing phase (6 weeks for earlobes, 12 weeks for ear piercings in the cartilage area). After all, the freshly pierced ear hole is initially a wound that should be kept as germ-free as possible. Public swimming pools are often contaminated with germs, especially bacteria. And pools that are cleaned with chlorine are of concern because the chlorine and its by-products can dry out and irritate skin. Even in bathing lakes or in the sea, germ contamination cannot be ruled out.
What material are the first ear studs made of?
The STUDEX® stud earrings used in my surgery are made of surgical steel or real gold. All STUDEX® ear studs are hypoallergenic and skin-friendly. They comply with both the provisions of the EU REACH regulation and the American FDA guidelines (U.S. Food & Drug Administration).
Do you pay attention to acupuncture points during ear piercing?
Since acupuncture points are considered sensitive areas that could have a connection to different parts of the body, it is advisable to take them into account when ear piercing to prevent possible unwanted effects. Stud placement is therefore carefully chosen to avoid acupuncture points and ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
