The most common cause of nosebleeds in children and adolescents is finger manipulation. In older people, on the other hand, high blood pressure in combination with increased vascular fragility often leads to nosebleeds. Nosebleeds occur particularly frequently during the heating period in the cold season. The ambient air is particularly dry here, so that the nasal mucous membranes dry out and this can lead to nosebleeds.
Anatomical constrictions, such as a crooked nasal septum, a hole in the nasal septum, or chronic inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses are also conducive to nosebleeds. The resulting air turbulence leads to increased dehydration of the nasal mucosa, which in turn can cause nosebleeds.
There are other causes for nosebleeds: a condition after an injury (accident with a broken nose), allergic rhinitis, nasal spray dependency or, more rarely, tumors of the inner nose.
